Overview

Photon-enhanced thermionic emission (PETE) was proposed in 2010 as a third alternative approach to solar electricity generation, in addition to photovoltaic and thermal conversion. Since then, there is a growing interest and research activity worldwide in this area, along with recognition of the scientific and technical challenges raised by this novel approach.

Understanding thermionic emission and PETE requires an inter-disciplinary effort involving materials science, semiconductor physics, surface science, as well as advanced optical, electronic and thermal engineering. This international workshop is the first opportunity to bring together researchers from different disciplines to present, discuss, and brainstorm the various aspects of thermionic emission and PETE, and paths to take it from concept to practice.
